Anti-Gang Initiatives
I am writing to invite you to send a representative from your
community council to meeting we are hosting on anti-gang
initiatives. We will meet the first Thursday in November which is
the 5th of November 2009, at 6:00 p.m. I am still working on the
location.
Last year the Poplar Grove community council formed a subcommittee to
address the growing gang problem. We named it the ROMERO ALTERNATIVE
in honor of Archbishop Romero of El Salvador who lost his life fight
in violence in his country. We have diligently been working on
prevention issues since its inception.
We now would like to take a more proactive approach in promoting the
passage of ordinances and state legislation to combat the gang
violence in our communities. We also believe that there are other
steps we can take as a community to teach our children the perils of
gang involvement.
Lat year I was asked to serve on the Mayor's Task Force on gangs.
Earlier this year, that task force was dissolved ant the Mayor
formed a Steering Committee to develop policy and direction. I
currently serve on that steering committee, sadly it is still trying
to find its identity and direction.
Please feel free to pass this email on to those that might be
interested in assisting us in this effort. Due to the time element,
our first order of business will be support state anti-gang
legislation.
Contact me via email or the phone number below to confirm your
desire to participate in this effort. I will have additional
information that I will send or whoever you choose to send as your
representative.
Shalom,
J. Michael Clára
